Independent endorsement of REHAU AWADUKT Thermo performance
In the UK, demand for the REHAU AWADUKT Thermo ground – air heat exchanger system is booming with commercial clients across the private and public sectors looking to use the system to meet both legislative and environmental pressures for low energy controlled ventilation.

In the majority of new installations, clients are putting in place monitoring systems to evaluate the performance and payback of the system but inevitably, these will take many months or even years to report fully.

However, similar research has already been completed at installations across Europe where the system has been operational for some time. For example, REHAU has just completed a year-long research and monitoring project on a large installation at a new build TESCO store in Poland, conducted in close collaboration with TESCO and the Technical University of Posen (Institute for Heating Technology).

The supermarket, built in Zdzieszowice near Oppeln in 2007, uses a range of sustainable energy systems including the REHAU AWADUKT Thermo ground – air heat exchanger. Connected to a central ventilation and heat recovery system, it guarantees an optimum supply of fresh air to the store which is pre-heated in winter and pre-cooled in summer, considerably reducing the demands on other HVAC space heating and cooling equipment installed.

The research project has so far demonstrated that, at the store, which has an annual heating requirement of 46,320kWh, the REHAU AWADUKT system is providing a heating output of some 20,500kWh/a. At 2008 prices, this is saving approximately €2,000 on typical annual fuel costs. Similarly, around €1,000 is being saved on annual cooling costs compared with cooling via a conventional air conditioning unit since the REHAU system is also contributing 10,700kWh/a in cooling energy in the summer.

Part of the project involved the monitoring of the actual air temperatures at the air inlets and outlets of the REHAU AWADUKT Thermo system in order to evaluate just how effectively it operates. The findings are an impressive endorsement of the performance of the technology and in particular the optimised polypropylene used for the pipework which enables maximum heat transfer to take place between the ground and the air. For example, with an external air temperature of -2ºC at the air inlet, exit temperatures from the AWADUKT Thermo pipework are up to 13ºC, meaning that in order to achieve a typical internal air temperature of 19º, it is only necessary to heat incoming air by a further 6ºC.
