Energy efficiency in the retail sector:
Supermarket in Poland reduces energy requirement with AWADUKT Thermo antimicrobial
By optimising the energy management of the TESCO supermarket in Oppeln, Poland, the energy requirement compared to traditionally-built upermarkets is significantly reduced. Thereby the natural energy sources like solar, wind and ground-source energy were used. To exploit ground-source energy, a ground-air heat exchanger (GAHE) was installed to pre-cool the air in the summer and pre-heat the air in the winter, saving energy costs.
To confirm the previously calculated saving of energy e.g. over 20 000 kWh per year alone by the AWADUKT Thermo ground-air heat exchanger, Rehau decided in cooperation with the Technical University in Poznań (Politechnika Poznanska) to performed a one-year research project for the project TESCO Oppeln / Zdzieszowice. After the opening of the supermarket, the test began in April 2007. One year of measurement started- and the results confirm the high efficiency of AWADUKT Thermo.

Project: TESCO supermarket in Zdzieszowice in Oppeln (Poland)
Client:TESCO Polska Sp z o.o.
Installer: GLOBAL-TECH
REHAU System:
The ground-air heat exchanger AWADUKT Thermo antimicrobial exploits the constant temperature of the soil to pre-tempering the outdoor air. In connection with a ventilation and heat recovery system, an efficient fresh air supply is guaranteed. The special antimicrobial coating inside the pipe prevents microbial growth and helps ensure a supply a fresh, filtered air into the building.
With an annual heating demand of approximately 45,000 kWh, the GAHE will produce about 20,000 kWh made available. This results in a heating saving of approx. 2.000€ pa. In the summer the largely constant temperature of the soil can also be used for cooling. Compared to a cooling with a conventional air conditioning system, the GAHE saves approx. € 1,000 pa
Data:- Laying in Tichelmann system
- 700 m AWADUKT Thermo pipe DN 200
- 50 m AWADUKT thermo distribution pipe in DN 500
- 2,700 m3/h air flow rate
- 20,500 kWh of energy savings in winter
- 10,700 kWh of energy savings in summer
The aim of the research project is to confirm the actual performance of the ground-air heat exchanger.
The parties involved:
- Poznan University of Technology (Politechnika Poznańska) - Institute for heating systems, air conditioning and environmental protection
- TESCO Engineering division
- REHAU AG + Co (Technical Department)
The testers were provided at the Technical University of Poznan.
After the opening of the supermarket on 06.03.2007, around one month later on 04.04.2007 began a one-year measurement. The results demonstrate the high performance of the GAHE. The measurements were made at outdoor temperatures of up to -2 ° C and reached outlet temperatures of 13 ° C at the end of the GAHE.
To reach a building temperature of +19 ° C, the air must therefore only be heated by 6 degrees. Therefore, the ground-air heat exchanger AWADUKT Thermo reduced the costs for heating energy significantly.
