The REHAU Polytec 50 curtain walling system has been used in the second phase of a refurbishment programme at St Margaret of Scotland Junior School in Luton, having been preferred to the aluminium curtain walling used in phase one.
Three screens were manufactured and installed by Wellingborough-based fabricator Astraseal in a contract for the Northampton RC Diocese. Two 10m x 6m screens have been fitted across first and second storey classrooms and a further screen in the school’s gymnasium.
REHAU Polytec 50 is a composite curtain walling system which combines the structural capabilities of steel reinforcement with the design and finish of aluminium on the exterior and the warmth and low maintenance benefits of PVC-U on the interior. These characteristics make it the ideal curtain walling system for educational buildings either new-build or refurbishment.
At St Margaret’s School, the REHAU system is almost indistinguishable externally from the previously installed aluminium screen with sightlines of just 50mm, but its superior thermal performance means that internally it feels warmer to the touch and thus offers better comfort levels for pupils and will significantly cut down the heating costs.
Mrs Cassidy, Deputy Headteacher at the school, said: “Many of our pupils say they prefer the new screens especially on cold days because it feels and looks much warmer inside.”
REHAU Polytec 50 offers outstanding thermal performance with an Uf-Value of up to 1.0.W/m²K thanks to the thermal break achieved by the polymer and foam layer between the aluminium face to the outside and steel reinforcement on the inside.
With an E-modulus of three times greater than aluminium, REHAU says that the structural capabilities can easily outperform aluminium sections with the same geometry, which is successfully show in the gymnasium at the school.
Astraseal has built a reputation as a specialist fabricator in REHAU Polytec 50 and was chosen for this contract on the basis of its proven quality and experience.
The main contractor for the school refurbishment project was Tofield Ltd of Milton Keynes.
