LOW CARBON HOUSE ATTRACTS INTEREST FROM SOCIAL HOUSING SECTOR
The low carbon demonstration house at South Lanarkshire College, in which polymer group REHAU is a key partner, has proved a major draw for some of the leading figures in the Scottish social housing market this year.

Since it opened at the end of January, more than 130 representatives from housing associations across Scotland have attended a series of presentations and tours of the house hosted by REHAU to see the ‘future’ of house building using affordable, low carbon solutions.

REHAU’s contribution to the house is very significant and includes high efficiency PVC-U windows, leak free flexible heating and plumbing pipework, sound insulated waste water pipe, the AWADUKT Thermo ground – air heat exchanger, geothermal probes, underfloor heating and rainwater harvesting.

The company says it has been delighted with the response from visitors to all of the innovations in the house, which has achieved a Code for Sustainable Homes, Level 5 standard.

Colin Pearson, Head of the REHAU’s Glasgow office, said: “Visitors generally come to the house eager to see for themselves the new technologies available in action and to discuss how they can potentially incorporate these into both current and future developments.

“The house is a four-bedroom detached, but we make it clear throughout all of the tours that it is easily scalable and could be adapted for larger or smaller designs and for semi-detached, terraced or even multi-storey styles.

“Similarly, all of the innovations in the house are mainstream, affordable products which are available now and which could be rolled out immediately into both new build and refurbishment projects.”

Colette McKenna, Technical Services Manager at Wishaw & District Housing Association, who visited the house last month, said: “Visiting the demonstration house was definitely worthwhile. Not only did it show me the scale of REHAU’s expertise in the sustainable energy sector, but it also showed me how easily the necessary technologies could be incorporated into quite typical social housing projects.

“I was aware of the theory behind many of the product innovations before I visited, but it was good to be able to see them working in a real life application.”

The house, which was built by Dawn Homes using a timber frame kit, has been constructed specifically to showcase the design and technologies which will be required in future new house building to meet future building standards, as well as to allow for training of the college’s construction students. For example, it has cut away sections to show construction approaches, plumbing and heating systems and insulation materials which would normally be hidden below ground or behind walls

The next scheduled REHAU visits to the house are on 24 August and 9 September. To book a place or to find out further details about the project, contact Leila Breustedt from REHAU’s Scottish office on: 01698 503700 or email Leila.Breustedt@rehau.com
