RAUTHERMEX CHOSEN FOR DISTRICT HEATING SCHEME

RAUTHERMEX CHOSEN FOR DISTRICT HEATING SCHEME Rauthermex PE-Xa Pipe
REHAU’s RAUTHERMEX pre-insulated PE-Xa pipework has been supplied for a new 250 unit district heating scheme in Surrey built by lead contractors Bellway Homes.

The Park 25 development in Redhill features a ring main around the housing development in the RAUTHERMEX system supplying heating and hot water for each of the apartments on the site.

It is part of a sustainable heating scheme designed by MCA Consulting Engineers Ltd and installed by SIAS Building Services.

The heat source is an 840kW wood chip powered biomass boiler with a gas-fired back up facility. The boiler is sited in a large plant room in the basement of one of the apartment blocks on the site and feeds the pipework which is laid in a trench in a ring main with spurs off to each property.

The pre-insulated RAUTHERMEX pipework is easy to install, safe to use and low maintenance. It features carrier pipes in lengths of up to 760m made from the same PE-Xa which is used for REHAU’s underfloor heating systems, pre-insulated with a closed cell polyurethane foam.

The foam provides optimum heat insulation and is longitudinally stable meaning that there is no change in length of the pipes laid underground due to temperature fluctuations while in operation.

The corrugation of the outer jacket allows tight bending radii at low bending forces, which makes for flexible and efficient installation and fewer connection points.

A major influencing factor in the specification of the REHAU pipework over other similar systems was that, where joints are required, they can be completed using the company’s high performance, fully warrantied compression sleeve jointing system.

SIAS liked the fact that the pipe and joints system, while innovative in the UK, had already been proven by REHAU on similar projects across Europe. They were also impressed by the technical design and on-site support available via REHAU’s sales office in Slough.
